Joanna Morgan, LMBT #22082
Certified Esalen® Massage Practitioner No. 21000794
Hi, I'm Joanna - many know me as Jo.
I believe that when you feel good in your body, it ripples into every part of your life: how you relate to yourself, hold boundaries, and move through the world.
My Journey
My healing path has included therapy, bodywork, somatic practices, and challenging deeply held beliefs. When I experienced Esalen massage, something clicked. I didn't realize I could feel this good in my body.
But what truly lit me up wasn't just the physical relief, but discovering the profound mental health benefits of touch. As someone who's struggled personally, who's watched family and friends struggle, learning that regular bodywork could decrease anxiety and depression felt revolutionary. When I discovered that one of Esalen Institute's founders drew inspiration from his own mental health journey and recovery, everything aligned. This work could change lives in ways beyond easing sore muscles.
Who I Serve
I hold space for anyone seeking healing and belonging, especially those the world has marginalized: survivors of abuse and violence, people in recovery from addiction, those healing from religious trauma, the LGBTQIA+ community, anyone navigating reentry after incarceration, and anyone the world has tried to cage or shame.
Your body is a temple- even when the world treated it otherwise.
My approach is rooted in presence, safety, and reverence for the body. Each session is:
• Trauma-sensitive and nervous-system focused
• Rooted in Esalen massage- slow, flowing, intentional touch
• Inclusive and affirming to all identities and experiences
• Based in healthy, non-sexual touch and clear consent
• Designed to help you access your body’s inner pharmacy — the healing capacity released through compassionate touch
I’m not here to fix you. I’m here to hold space for your body to remember its own wisdom and release what it’s been holding.
Why "Temple Ritual Bodywork"?
Your body is a temple, worthy of reverence and ritual care. I believe bodywork isn't occasional luxury - it's essential medicine for every stage of life.
We're reclaiming what our ancestors knew: healing happens through presence, breath, and touch.
Come as you are. Your body knows the way.
FAQs
-
Esalen blends long, flowing strokes with elements like gentle rocking, stretching, & other subtle techniques that support deep relaxation throughout your whole system.
Unlike Swedish or deep tissue, which often focus on specific regions of the body, Esalen uses integrative strokes that connect the whole body.
This creates a full-body experience that helps your entire system relax, not just isolated muscles.
-
Esalen massage isn’t about working on the body- it’s about working with it. Instead of forcing muscles to let go, the long, flowing strokes & presence help your system naturally soften and unwind.
Many clients who love deep tissue are surprised at how effective this gentler, integrative approach feels, leaving them both deeply relaxed and more in tune with their bodies.
I do offer deep tissue if that’s what you prefer, however I access the deeper layers of tissue with a slow, calming approach with a medium to gentle firm pressure. Never forcing.
-
Esalen is more than a massage- it’s an immersive experience. Instead of feeling clinical, it feels deeply human, helping you discover more ease & relief.
Rooted in the Human Potential Movement, it supports self-discovery, healing from stress or trauma, and reconnecting with your body’s natural rhythms. Many people leave feeling more embodied, present, and open to letting go.
-
It depends on your needs and goals. Research shows massage benefits are cumulative - monthly sessions support maintenance and stress management, while more frequent sessions (weekly or bi-weekly) can accelerate therapeutic effects for anxiety, pain, and chronic stress.
I'm happy to discuss what frequency might serve your healing journey best.
-
Absolutely not. All massage services at Temple Ritual Bodywork are professional, therapeutic, and non-sexual. Clear boundaries, draping, and consent are foundational to this work. Any inappropriate behavior is grounds for immediate termination of the session.
-
When our bodies receive compassionate, healthy touch, cortisol (stress hormone) naturally decreases. Simultaneously, our bodies miraculously release endorphins (natural pain relief), oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine (feel-good hormones). Receiving massage therapy creates the conditions for our inner pharmacies to work their magic naturally.
-
Yes - research shows regular massage can significantly support mental and emotional wellbeing by regulating the nervous system, reducing stress hormones, and creating safe space for the body to process what it's been holding. Bodywork is a powerful complement to traditional mental health treatment and can support you beautifully in your healing journey.
However, bodywork is not a replacement for professional mental health care, especially if you're experiencing a mental health crisis. I encourage you to work with therapists, psychiatrists, and/or crisis services as needed. This work shines when integrated alongside appropriate mental health support - whether traditional therapy, medication, or as part of your transition toward more holistic healing paths.

Safety is the foundation of this work.

My intention is therapeutic presence- supporting your body in finding ease without pain or excessive pressure.
